The Best Lecturer

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops ” , wrote Henry Brooks Adams . I had never should be experienced the truth of this quote until I met Madame Elizabeth Koh Bee Hoon , the best lecturer I ever had in my life .

I am a teacher who had graduated 5 years ago from a teacher training college in Sungai Petani , Kedah . And now , I have become a permanent teacher that have been teaching for nine years . I chose teacher as my profession all because I love children . However, I have had confronted so many teaching problems that nearly made me collapse and lose my passion.

I listed my teaching problems down daily and I tried my very best to overcome them . As time goes by , I found that the biggest problem that always caused me to have a headache is , my students are not interested in whatever subject I taught . I tried to overcome this problem many times but I failed and this affects their results in school . I was really sad and disappointed.

This year , I taught Year 4 English . The Year 4 students are the naughtiest and lousiest among all .Besides this , I have to be their form teacher too . I could not accept this and thought that my headmaster is really not fair in this case . I even cried because of this . Even though it seems hard and beyond my ability , I just did what I could but still it was a failure .

The situation continued until I was called to attend a 12 - day English course and met Madame Elizabeth . It was a course that divided into 4 phases . I am very thankful that I met her in my first and second phases. The 4th phase is yet to come. Hopefully I can meet her again .

Madame Elizabeth was always well- prepared before she delivers her lecture . She always prepares many teaching aids to help all the course participants learn better. As a result , the teaching aids did help us and we learned many precious lessons from her and I am sure , the knowledge will stick in our minds forever because she made us enjoy the course , love the language as well as did many hands on activities .

As Madame Elizabeth is always well – prepared , she is able to make a dull module lively . She always makes her lessons fun , letting all of us play while learning . So wherever she went , there will be a lot of laughter there . She did not only teaching what was in the module but she tried to motivate all the course participants too .

My teaching attitude and teaching style is now totally changed by her words and actions as she is a good role model to me. I can still remember the phrase which Madame Elizabeth said that influenced me the most : “Do not blame your students when they are not interested in what you are teaching . They had actually done nothing wrong . But look into yourself , see whether there are things that you yourself need to change . ” I enjoyed her lecture and enjoyed learning the language , As I wanted my students to have the same experience , I changed myself first . I changed that bad teaching perspective of mine to a better one . I tried to love my Year 4 students more , not just seeing them as the naughtiest and lousiest students in the school. I followed Madame Elizabeth’s footsteps in letting them play while learning . I even brought back the language game we played during the course and used it when I was in charge of the English Language Society in school. All my students enjoyed and indirectly I had successfully sparked their interest in the English Language . When this happened, my worst problem was settled and I could see their test results becoming better and better. I am really thankful for that . Once again , I took up teaching as my passion . I have become more joyful and happier for being a teacher now .

Madame Elizabeth is just like an angel that God sent to solve my problem. She is the best lecturer I had ever met as she had totally changed both my teaching attitude and teaching style by her words and her own actions. The changes in me myself has shown good effects among my students too . I am very thankful to be an English teacher this year because it leads to my meeting with Madame Elizabeth. If not because of this wonderful meetings , I will never have realized that I have used the wrong methods for teaching English all the way , Ignorantly believing that my methods were the best.

If I have not met Madame Elizabeth , I would still not be willing to learn to love my students as what they are. My poor students are always being scolded or punished by me because I do not allow mistakes. If it was not because of her teaching perspectives , my students would have continued to suffer for no reason . Many major changes within myself and the way I teach had taken place after I met such a good lecturer , Madame Elizabeth Koh Bee Hoon.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops ” , how true this saying is , just like what I am experiencing now . I am really glad to have meet Madame Elizabeth Koh Bee Hoon , the best lecturer who had cause many major changes in my life . I hope she can continue to be a channel of blessing to others for the rest of her life .
